If there’s one thing most of my couples say when they get in touch, it’s that they want something simple but pretty or, as one bride said, “not too fussy, quite simple.”
That’s music to my ears, because semi naked and buttercream wedding cakes are exactly that: effortlessly elegant, timeless, and beautifully personal.
In this blog, I’m sharing what makes these simple designs so loved by Peterborough couples, how to personalise them with flowers and toppers, and why simple never means boring.

What does “simple but pretty” mean when it comes to your wedding cake?
When someone mentions “simple but pretty” or “not too fussy,” I instantly think of a semi naked or buttercream cake. These styles are naturally relaxed yet elegant, perfect for couples who love a rustic or minimalist look.
I like to start by finding out what natural details can reflect your venue and personalities maybe fresh flowers, a log cake stand, or even a custom wooden or wire topper (one of my favourites featured the couple’s dog tugging at the wedding dress!).
To give a semi naked cake that extra special touch, I often add gold leaf details, delicate sprinkles, or edible pearls. A buttercream cake with sharp edges makes a bold statement on its own, but for a more rustic effect, I love adding soft textures like grooved sides, which are very popular right now.
Fresh flowers always finish it beautifully, tying everything together with your overall wedding style.

Why are semi naked cakes so popular for rustic and relaxed weddings in Peterborough?
Semi naked cakes have that effortless, laid-back charm that works perfectly for barn and countryside venues such as The Sissons Barn or The Granary at Molecey Estates.
With layers of sponge just peeking through a light layer of frosting, they’re also ideal for summer weddings, especially when you want something lighter than a thick layer of fondant. Their natural, elegant appearance complements relaxed celebrations and looks beautiful in any setting.

How to make a simple wedding cake feel special
Even with a minimalist design, there are endless ways to make your cake feel uniquely yours.
You can add a personalised topper that ties into your décor. Wooden toppers look lovely on semi naked cakes, but I’ve also used gold, black, rose gold, and even neon pink! (That one matched the couple’s vivid flower arrangements perfectly.)
If your florist can provide a few extra stems for the cake, it helps everything feel cohesive, your cake will blend seamlessly with your venue flowers.

Can couples provide their own flowers or topper?
Absolutely. I often coordinate directly with my couples’ florists to make sure the arrangements fit the cake perfectly. You can:
Have your florist supply the flowers.
Drop off artificial or dried flowers before the wedding.
Or I can source everything for you, whichever feels easiest.
The only thing I always emphasise is safety. Not all flowers are suitable for contact with food. There are many beautiful but toxic varieties often seen online, so I always double-check that everything used is food safe.
If you’re unsure, I have a full list of safe and unsafe flowers and can recommend a florist who really knows her stuff. You can also read my advice on gluten free wedding cakes to learn more about allergen-friendly and safe cake design.
Every stem is carefully prepared and sealed to ensure it never touches the cake directly.
And if you fancy something different, edible dried flowers are a great option, they look stunning on buttercream cakes and are completely food-safe.
How do buttercream cakes compare to more elaborate designs?
Buttercream cakes are sometimes seen as less “neat” than sugarpaste, but with the right tools (and recipe!), you can achieve beautifully sharp edges and a clean, modern finish.
They also taste lighter and less sweet, thanks to the silky Swiss meringue buttercream I use.
In terms of cost, buttercream and semi naked cakes are often more budget-friendly than fondant because they require fewer materials and less intricate labour, without losing that elegant look.
They’re also a more sustainable choice, using fewer ingredients and less packaging. You can read more about my sustainability ethos including how I donate leftover cake to a local food bank on my About Me page.
Simple, natural, elegant: how I love to decorate semi naked cakes
My favourite style is simple perfection: smooth edges, neat sides, a touch of gold leaf or pearl piping, and a few carefully placed fresh flowers.
That’s the beauty of this style, it doesn’t need much. Each detail adds just enough luxury while keeping the look natural and timeless.

Worried a simple cake might look too plain?
Simple doesn’t mean boring! If you’re unsure, look through my designs, or search Pinterest to see how they look in context. Think about:
Where your cake will be displayed (a log stand, mirrored table, crates, etc.)
How your décor will frame it
Whether you’d like a personalised topper or flowers to tie it all together
One of my favourite examples was a three-tier white cake with a black silhouette topper, the groom in a kilt, and their dog sneaking a bite from the back!
If you’re still unsure, send me a few photos of your venue, décor, or even your dress, and I’ll help you choose details that bring your cake vision to life.
Why weekday weddings and smaller celebrations love semi naked cakes
Many weekday weddings are more intimate and relaxed, which makes semi naked cakes an ideal fit as they’re beautiful and easy to personalise.
With so many stylish toppers available, you can order a professionally baked cake and simply add your own finishing touches. It’s a cost-effective way to have something that still feels bespoke and special.
